2007 Youth Grantmakers Summer Leadership
Conference: “Moving Forward with the
Basics” was a huge success. This year’s conference, from June
22nd – 24th, was held on the north campus of the University of
Michigan. Over 175 youth and advisors came from Michigan,
Ohio, Indiana, Kansas, Iowa, and Massachusetts to learn more
about youth philanthropy. The conference was based on former
Kellogg Foundation’s CEO Russ Mawby’s original idea for youth
philanthropy in Michigan. His idea was a three-pronged model
focusing on fund development, youth empowerment, and
grantmaking. To help empower youth, Ben Falik, co-founder of
Summer in the City, a summer volunteer program for youth in
the Detroit area, spoke to the participants and got them
pumped up to go get other youth excited about volunteering.
The grantmaking sessions based on technology, recruitment,
evaluating grants, the basics, project planning, and
leadership training were planned and facilitated by the
Michigan Community Foundations’ Youth Project (MCFYP)
committee. Five grants or community initiatives from the
participants’ youth committees were given the honor of being a
“Great Grant” this year. In addition, participants went over
the fourteen Best Practices and discussed what each YAC does
differently to give them ideas on improving their YACs.
Participants left the conference better connected, with more
knowledge, and excited to go home and implement everything
that they learned.
