Rural Education Days
- Wexford County Farm Bureau has been awarded a grant from the
Cadillac & Kellogg for Youth Committee, an advisory committee to
the Cadillac Area Community Foundation, for the purpose of
Cadillac Area School students’ participation in Rural Education
Days, also known as Project RED. Approximately 250 Cadillac Area
School 5th graders have been participating in the event
previously known as Dairy Tour. Ken and Brenda DeZeeuw, Many
Blessing Dairy, Lucas, graciously host this event. This year the
event will also encompass other natural resource concerns. Half
the day will be spent at Many Blessings Dairy and half the day
will be spent at Crooked Lake Campground. Topics covered include
Sheep, Horses, Veterinarian, Milk from Cow to You, Nutrient
Management, Forestry, Beekeeping (scheduled), Hunting Dogs, and
more. Area agri-businesses, agencies and volunteers support the
event.
Students Spring Into Service
- FORCE members from the Saginaw Area Community Foundation
participate annually in Make a Difference day. They gr ant
money for food and t-shirts, but the event is organized by of a
group of volunteers via the foundation, Saginaw's Promise, the
United Way, and other community organizations in Saginaw. Every
year they do different things , but this year they did "Putting
the Spark back in Saginaw's Parks" as a
theme and planted, cleaned, raked, weeded, and PAINTED Saginaw's
Crayola Park, Garber Tennis Courts, and the West Side floating
docks. All the parks are owned by the city, which has little to
no budget, so the Mayor came to talk to the students in the
morning. They invite all Sag. Co. Schools and usually have about
250-350 volunteers attend for the day.
