Ethics Bowl

Is ethics ever a problem when doing grantmaking? Below are six sample ethics bowl cases to help youth grantmakers deal with situations they might face in real life.

Ethics Bowl Cases

  • Choosing New Members - In choosing a new YAC member, do you vote for your friend or someone who you know will grow as a person and a leader?
  • The Perfect Fit - Does religion play a part in your decisions concerning a potential grantee?
  • Rival Schools - Are you as a YAC member, able to separate your personal ties to a potential grantee in order to make the best decision for your YAC?
  • Sure Bet - Do you go with the sure bet, or take a risk and fund a much needier new program?
  • Carrying the Organization - In economic downtimes, do you stick to your funding policy in regards to salaries, utility bills, etc.?
  • Proactive or Policy - Is it ok to be proactive to meet a need in your community, or should you stick to policy and trust that the issue will be taken care of by other means?
