Each summer, the Michigan Community Foundations Youth Project Committee hosts an annual Youth Grantmakers Summer Leadership Conference. Usually held in late June, the conference spans three days and is planned and facilitated entirely by youth.
The conference is typically held at a college campus somewhere in Michigan, with participants staying in the dorms, eating in the cafeteria, and participating in sessions in the classrooms. The conference covers both YAC operations – including grantmaking, fund development, and community service – and personal leadership, while providing a fun, youth-driven atmosphere.
The Youth Grantmakers Summer Leadership Conference (SYLC) is all about youth empowerment, but empowerment takes two parties ~ young people that can be empowered and adults who can do the empowering. More than 250 particpants attended this year’s conference, “A Second Look: Seeing Challenges as Opportunities,” at Michigan State University in June, including more than 50 advisors who participated in a special track of programming specifically for advisors.
