2007 Youth Grantmakers Summer Leadership Conference: June 22-24, 2007 at the University of Michigan

Over 175 youth and advisors came together for three days to learn more about youth philanthropy at the 2007 Youth Grantmakers Summer Leadership Conference.  Guests from Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Ohio met at the University of Michigan June 22 – 24 to participate in this year’s conference; themed “Moving Forward with the Basics”.

As the theme suggests, the conference focused a lot on the basics of youth philanthropy. More specifically, it centered around three keys parts that every Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) should focus on; fund development, youth empowerment, and grantmaking. Throughout the weekend, participants were able to attend sessions about recruitment, officer training, technology integration , and more.  Attendees participated in a Friday night performance by the Corner Health Theatre Troupe, an Ann Arbor youth troupe, about depression and its effects on teenagers.

Once again, the Michigan Community Foundations’ Youth Project (MCFYP) committee was the driving force behind the success of the conference; facilitating all of the sessions, planning the majority of the sessions, and making sure everyone was having a great time.  They also picked the annual “Great Grants and Community Initiative” award winners.

The conference was a huge success, and it looked like everyone went home with new friends, new ideas, and a greater understanding and knowledge of youth philanthropy.
